Hackers Steal $2.3 Million from Wisconsin Republican Party
The FBI are investigating the hacking of the Wisconsin Republican party and theft of US$2.3 million in place to help re-elect President Donald Trump.
The hackers altered invoices from vendors used by the party, so when the invoices were paid, the funds were re-directed into the hands of the cybercriminals.
"The theft was the result of a sophisticated phishing attack," said State party chairman Andrew Hitt. "These criminals exhibited a level of familiarity with state party operations at the end of the campaign to commit this crime."
No data was stolen during the attack, which was discovered on October 22 after "suspicious activity" was noticed, and reported to the FBI the following day. State Party officials had been warned - at this year's party national convention - about the possibility of cyberattacks.
The theft hasn't slowed the Wisconsin Republican party's desire to see President Trump win a second term.
"While a large sum of money was stolen, our operation is running at full capacity with all the resources deployed to support the president's re-election bid," said Hitt.
